Dear members,
At the beginning of the new year I want to share with you a review of the activities of the SEBD in 2019 and a perspective on the new initiatives that we propose for 2020. Last year was special, due to the organization of the European Congress of Biology of the Desarrollo (Alicante), at the initiative of the SEBD and in coordination with the European Societies for Development Biology and ISDB. The excellent response to participation in the Congress and the general perception of its quality and interest represent an international leadership success for the Spanish Community of Developmental Biology and will serve to enhance our area of knowledge in the European sphere. From the SEBD we will continue working on the internationalization of our activity, ensuring the continuity of the European Congresses every 4 years in alternation with the ISDB Congress, in whose organization we will collaborate in 2021 (Algarve, Portugal).
In addition to the organization of EDBC2019, in 2019 a priority of the SEBD has been the promotion of young talent, with reduced enrollment prices for students, awarding of travel bags and prizes for the best communications at EDBC2019. On the other hand, we have made an effort to improve the dissemination of the activities and results of the SEBD Partners and Developmental Biology in general on social media. The response from the Scientific Community has been excellent to these initiatives and we are pleased to report that the number of members up to date with payment has increased by 50% in the last 4 years, reaching its maximum in 2019. Likewise, the number of followers of the SEBD twitter account now exceeds 500 followers, which provides us with a quick channel to communicate relevant aspects of our activities and initiatives to our partners and the scientific community in general.
In 2020 we will continue our efforts to disseminate and promote young talent in Developmental Biology. One of the most important initiatives will be the celebration of the SEBD Congress in Bilbao (18-20 Nov), with a format more open to the communications of young researchers and in which we hope to see you all. On the other hand, we will promote the policy of supporting low registration fees for the Congress and the granting of travel bags and prizes that recognize the contributions and scientific trajectory of Development Biologists and especially young talents. Finally, we will continue promoting the Communication policy, involving SEBD partners interested in scientific dissemination, in order to publicize our research work and activities in the scientific and public fields.
Today more than ever, Developmental Biology is an essential discipline for scientific progress in multiple frontier fields, including genomics, systems biology, evolution, tissue and organ design, reproductive medicine, and regeneration. The work carried out by the SEBD in support of Developmental Biology would not be possible without the support of all its partners, so the Board of Directors would like to especially thank you for the commitment to our Society and the enthusiastic and essential support of its activities. I wish you a 2020 full of joys and good Science.
Best regards,
Miguel Torres, President of the SEBD
